Wellness Day gives some good advice to those who attend

Members of No Teacher Left Behind were offered a chance to learn about their health and wellness during Wellness Day at Summersill Elementary School on Saturday. "Organizations have been doing health fairs for years and we wanted do do something different," said Greg Gibson, director of the Onslow County School's staff wellness program. The program has 500 members in 20 Onslow County schools, he said, and it is open to all staff, not just teachers. By 10 a.m. - half an hour into the event - there were already 35 people there. Lynda Moore, a Reading Innovation Program teacher at Richlands and Clyde Erwin elementary schools, was at the event to learn more. "It's a wonderful program, very proactive. Teachers are very enthusiastic, and we really appreciate Greg and Kim (Parker) stepping up and doing this," she said.

Patient deaths prompt hospital probe

NEW YORK, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- The New York State Health Department is continuing to investigate a Long Island hospital where a woman died after alleged unwarranted breast cancer surgery.

Mercy Medical Center was cited for a lab mix-up that resulted in an incorrect diagnosis of breast cancer for a woman in her 30s, The New York Times reported Monday. The woman opted for a double mastectomy because of her family history and died of complications the day after her surgery last May.

The Health Department concluded that the hospital had taken proper corrective action after the mix-up but said it is investigating Mercy over the deaths of three other patients.

That probe, the Times said, was prompted by the complaints of one of its doctors that a physician's assistant had improperly inserted catheters, chest tubes and pacemakers into patients.

A slippery slope for health?

Most European countries operate an insurance-based health care scheme. Citizens are obliged to pay into state-operated or state-recognised insurance funds. Hospitals and general practitioners (and specialists who offer primary consultations) claim back all or part of the costs of treatment from the relevant insurance providers.

There have long been difficulties in citizens getting costs covered by their state-recognised schemes when they seek treatment in a neighbouring country whose facilities are more convenient to travel to (e.g. the German-Dutch border area around Aachen).

Regulation 1408/71 was supposed to deal with this but clearly doesn't. That Regulation, insofar as it covers healthcare, is designed essentially to allow the government of one country to get back from other governments the money spent on treating their citizens.

Esteban Loaiza was cruising through the top of the sixth, retiring the first two batters, when Craig Monroe lined a solid double to right-center. Enter Gomez, inserted into the DH slot by manager Jim Leyland because a right-hander was pitching and because the injury to Sean Casey caused several shifts in the Detroit lineup.

The 28-year-old Gomez broke into professional ball with the Kansas City organization in 1997, and he's been kicking around the perimeter ever since. He had a cup of coffee with the 2002 Royals, a tall vanilla latte with the Royals again two years later, then a caramel frappuccino with last year's Tigers, the three stints totaling all of 55 at-bats.

He got his first real taste of an entree this year, playing 62 games for Jim Leyland, and he managed to stroke his first big-league homer along the way -- a June 27 shot off Houston's Fernando Nieve in an interleague game.
