All-star benefit concerts relics of the past?

When the music industry celebrates the Grammy Awards Sunday night, one of the night's subplots will be the Internet's troubling impact on record sales. Few have paid attention to another trend: more musicians are going online rather than onstage for their charitable work.

The English rock group Radiohead recently made news when members decided to sell their music directly to their fans. Musicians are going online with their favorite charities for a similar reason -- they want to appeal directly to their fan base, music commentators say.

Popular artists such as Madonna, R&B pianist John Legend and country singer Clay Walker are leading the way. Each prominently promotes their favorite charity through their official Web site.

Obama says borrowed lines not a big deal

Obama said that Patrick suggested he use the lines to respond to Hillary Rodham Clinton's suggestion that Obama is more of a talker than a doer.

Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson accused Obama of plagiarizing Patrick, and that's particularly troubling since Obama's appeal is based in large part on his rhetorical skills.

"It raises questions about the premise of his candidacy," Wolfson told reporters in a conference call. Clinton told reporters late Monday evening: "If your whole candidacy is about words, those words should be your own. That's what I think."

Obama, D-Ill., says that's going too far.

"Now hold on a second. Let's see — I've written two books, wrote most of my speeches," Obama told reporters at a news conference after touring a titanium plant.

Germ fighters: Consumers buy more disinfecting wipes for hands and ...

Germs are the enemy at Nice-Pak Products Inc., which claims to make 80 percent of the world's disinfecting wipes and has products designed to clean everything from shopping cart handles to babies' bottoms. The privately held company, based 20 miles north of New York City in Orangeburg, N.Y., says its big break came 50 years ago when Kentucky Fried Chicken put in a big order for the original Wet-Nap moist towelette, apparently to wipe away whatever finger-lickin' didn't.

Now Nice-Pak makes 50 to 100 billion wipes a year at plants in Orangeburg; Green Bay, Wis.; Morseville, Ind.; Flint, Wales, and Osterweddingen, Germany. Expansion to Asia is under consideration. The company makes wipes under its own Sani-Hands brand and also makes and packages wipes for some store brands and other private labels.

Massachusetts Group Launches Campaign To Regulate Drug Maker Marketing

The newly formed Massachusetts Prescription Reform Coalition on Thursday announced an effort to curb pharmaceutical industry marketing in an attempt to bring down drug costs and health spending, the Boston Globe reports. The coalition has three objectives:
Prohibit gifts from drug makers to health care professionals who prescribe drugs;

Ban data-mining; and

Create a drug education program to provide unbiased information to physicians. The coalition was created by Health Care for All, and its members include AARP, the Massachusetts Public Interest Research Group, the American Heart Association, the American Stroke Association, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts and Neighborhood Health Plan.

Geriatrician Care Guards Against Risk of Inappropriate Meds

FRIDAY, Jan. 25 (HealthDay News) -- Elderly Americans taking prescription medications face a lower risk for being given an inappropriate drug or dosage if they receive care from a geriatrician, new research reveals.

The finding is based on a large, national review of mostly male veterans who sought care at VA facilities across the United States.

The analysis indicates that roughly one in four vets were inappropriately prescribed medications, while those few who had visited with a geriatrician in the past year had reduced exposure to such critical mistakes.

"Geriatric care seems to help protect patients who are receiving prescription medications," said study author Mary Jo V. Pugh, a research health scientist with the South Texas Veterans Health Care System, and an assistant professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
