Bad hair day brings break-in at wrong salon, ends with arrest

A woman's bad hair day got worse Wednesday after deputies say she broke into an East Naples beauty salon to get a refund for an alleged botched hairdo, according to Collier County Sheriff's deputies.

But Joann R. Olivio broke into the wrong salon, according to reports. Olivio, 72, of 2305 Hidden Lake Drive, Apt. 1, was charged with burglary and petty theft.

Reports say deputies responded to an alarm at Studio 3 Hair Salon, 4025 Santa Barbara Blvd., around 3:30 a.m. The glass in the front door had been broken.

Deputies searched the salon and found Olivio crouched behind the cash register, wearing a housecoat, pajamas, slippers, and yellow dishwashing gloves. A jacket she wore over her housecoat had shards of glass on it. She was holding a hammer, squeegee and small flashlight.

New grad. stipend a boon to students

For students in the social sciences and humanities the announcement that we will now receive year-round funding is music to the ears. This increase in funding is not only a solution to financial concerns but also affirms the importance of our work.

In the past, humanities students have worked year-round but found it difficult to fund themselves during the summer months. It is true that during my time at Yale, the summer funding package increased from $3,000/summer for the first two summers to $3,700/summer for any three summers, but this still left us piecing together support for the remaining two summers.

Furthermore, even with the increase, the amount of summer funding never equaled what we made during the year. In other words, the approach of summer — the time of year when our teaching responsibilities are done and we can really get to work on our projects — was a time of anxiety.

Mickey Kaus

That seems like quite a bit to me, though I'm no S.E.C. expert. It apparently includes a $20,000 fine. From the S.E.C.'s news release, with emphasis added:

The Commission's Complaint, filed on April 14, 2003, alleged that beginning on March 6, 2000, Armstrong touted the stock of BluePoint Linux Software Corporation ("BluePoint") by posting unsubstantiated, favorable buy recommendations on the Raging Bull internet site. Armstrong posted over eighty such recommendations during the first three weeks that the stock of BluePoint was publicly traded. According to the Complaint, Armstrong praised BluePoint's investment value and encouraged investors who were experiencing trouble having their orders filled to keep trying. The Complaint further alleged that the promoters of BluePoint were secretly transferring stock in three other companies to Armstrong at prices below the then current market for those three stocks and that Armstrong made at least $20,000 by selling the shares he received from the promoters of BluePoint.

Deadly new superbug emerges in Minnesota

The nation's first known cases of antibiotic-resistant meningococcal disease surfaced in northwest Minnesota and eastern North Dakota over the past year, according to the Minnesota Department of Health.

Health authorities on Friday asked doctors in the Fargo-Moorhead area to stop using ciprofloxacin for preventive treatment of people in close contact with meningococcal patients and to use antibiotics outside the quinolone family.

The drug-resistant strains are the latest evidence of antibiotic overuse, particularly in patients whose colds are viral and not bacterial.

"Even though there are other drugs that can be used to prevent meningococcal disease, having one less weapon in our arsenal reminds us of the importance of appropriate antibiotic use," said Dr. Ruth Lynfield, state epidemiologist.

Tories demand Salmond quit as MP

It shows that since May 8, Mr Salmond has turned up at Westminster to vote on only two days.

On July 25, he took part in three votes on immigration, the machinery of government and home affairs. The other occasion was on November 19, when he voted in favour of the European Communities (Finance) Bill.

The figures also show he missed a number of votes during the Holyrood election campaign.

It is not the first time that Mr Salmond has been criticised over his decision to continue as both an MP and an MSP.

The Liberal Democrats accused him of breaking a pre-election promise to accept only one salary.

However, the First Minister later announced he would be donating the one-third of his Holyrood salary to which he is entitled as a so-called "dual mandate" politician to a special trust fund to help community projects in the north-east of Scotland.
