Will anti-racists cheer for Obama?

Diane Abbott MP, London, In as much as I do not completely yield to Obamania, I agree with Mr. Finkelstein's article on the understanding that what he is criticising is race mongering. Black people cannot continue to moan about racism even today when overt racism has virtually been eradicated. I believe we must now look far beyond racism for the reasons for our failures because other groups like the Jews and Asians have moved far beyond expectations despite racism. I am very weary of the fact that there is no successful society of Black people anywhere on this planet and the much more shameful fact that the most racist white country would treat Black criminals better than the best Black country would treat its professors. Hon. Abbott, I am talking from my experiences of life in the largest Black country, Nigeria and many other west African countries.

Behind the Edwards Surge: Right Message at the Right Time

Much was made of Illinois Senator Barack Obama's superb speech to a huge crowd of Iowa Democrats at the mid-November Jefferson-Jackson Day dinner in Des Moines. Without a doubt, it helped to propel Obama ahead of New York Senator Hillary Clinton in polls conducted in the weeks after the event.

But Obama's speech in November may not turn out to be the definitional statement of the fight for Iowa.

What could turn out to be the most critical comment of the campaign came from John Edwards in the last debate between the Democratic contenders — and the former senator from North Carolina may well claim the caucus-night victory that is the reward for delivering the right message at the right time.

It wasn't a great rhetorical flourish. It wasn't even a new statement.

Hotline activated for needy in region

A new hotline makes finding social services as easy as calling police or firefighters.

Beginning today, anyone in the Bay Area who needs help with food, housing, employment or health care can simply dial 211.

The three-digit hotline began operating in San Francisco nearly two years ago; and since then six other Bay Area counties - Solano, Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa and Santa Clara - have been in various stages of operation.

But as of this morning, the service is officially up throughout the seven-county region.

Among the newcomers is Contra Costa County, where 211 has operated in test mode until today. Still, operators at the Contra Costa Crisis Center have been fielding hundreds of calls a month.

"Near Concord? OK, let's see, hmm," specialist Minerva Blaine told a caller Friday, scrolling through a computer database to find affordable housing units for the homeless mother of a new baby.

Clinton and Obama address economic fears

We all need to remember a few things here. As a Veteran, I admire John McCain's service and sacrifice for his country…albeit in a needless conflict. However, being a POW doesn't necessarily always translate into being a good military strategist or possible Commander in Chief. Yet, what disturbs me most about his behavior is that while lamenting the decline of citizen responsibility and duty, which is of course blamed on Liberals, he has never denounced the shirking behavior of George Bush or other current and former members of the Administration. Why has he not spoken out when the people involved are close to home? All this talk about McCain's integrity is totally overblown. He is a politician above all and , regrettably, like most Republicans (and Democrats), he posesses absolutely no vision for America or the world in the 21st Century.

'Sidelining the paper'

All of which is very pleasant and well meant. Yes, I like to think I was a good journalist but the fact Watford and the Watford Observer do not have a good relationship is not a reflection on the journalists who followed me.

They may have approached certain issues from a different direction and may have opted not to go too hard on certain aspects in the early days after I left, but their intentions were good, being Watford fans by heritage who would have preferred to have maintained the coverage at the old levels - levels that were established more than 120 years ago.
