David Swanson: Obamessives And Obamicans

Now, I suspect that a lot of Obama supporters think he is more progressive than he is, imagine he's far less militaristic and corporate than he says he is in interviews, debates, and in his second book. But my friend had read his first book, and she also knew what is needed to get past the corporate media guardians of U.S. election booths. She, as I suspect many are doing, put her hope in the notion that Obama is faking his corporate militarism in order to get past GE, Fox, Viacom, and Disney, and once he's elected he'll be a real progressive. I'm putting what little hope I have in a slightly different place. My hope is that the people filling the streets in Richmond will continue to fill the streets after Obama moves into the White House. My hope is that a movement can arise that will force Obama to be what we need him to be.

Dendreon Presents Data Correlating the Cumulative Potency of PROVENGE ...

SEATTLE and SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Researchers from Dendreon Corporation (NASDAQ: DNDN) today presented data demonstrating the correlation of a measure of the cumulative potency of PROVENGE (sipuleucel-T), an investigational active cellular immunotherapy for hormone-refractory prostate cancer, with overall survival. This is the first time that an association between higher potency of an active immune therapy and increased patient survival has been reported. The correlation appeared to be independent of other important baseline prognostic factors.

The abstract (#21), "Cell Number and CD54 Expression in Sipuleucel-T Correlate with Survival in Metastatic Androgen Independent Prostate Cancer," is being presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology's 2008 Genitourinary Symposium in San Francisco.

Your Comments : Soldiers stopped at airport

They waited this long to make a big drama out of this.

I think they shold have let them go to Iraq. Karma would have caught up with them and they would have earned a bullet in thier head.

Nothing will happen now, they will just piss arround for the next six months doing inquiries.

Ratu Kaugone of Suva says… It did not need the immigration nor police to stop these officers and murder suspects from going overseas. The Military and its leaders itself (and they were doing this to others since the coup) should have been the very first ones to stop and even suspend these officers ,even if they were suspects, from the military until they were cleared of the allegations. However, like everything they have been doing (IG included) till now everything wrong or alleged to be wrong by others are actioned.

Coming Soon: SR to Release E-mail Exchanges ... (Not so fast...)

Update: After reviewing the messages and our options (none good), we've decided not to post the messages. Here's the situation:

Of the 50 messages, a few have explicit photos embedded in the message. We can't publish those photos (one shows a toddler's penis). We also have a strong ethical policy against blurring or otherwise manipulating photos.

Some of the messages are completely innocuous. The rest of the messages only refer to attachments. Those attachments are explicit, so we can't publish them.

We've also gone through each message to blur e-mail addresses for privacy reasons.

So, if we don't publish any of the explicit images, and we refuse to blur, crop or otherwise alter them, all we're left with is a bunch of forwarded messages that say things like "take a look at this!"

We decided that did not advance the story in any significant way.

US soldiers likely to see shorter tours

Soldiers heading to war this summer are likely to see their tours shortened from 15 months to 12 months, even if troop cuts in Iraq are suspended in July as expected, the Army's top general said Tuesday.

Gen. George Casey said that while his forces are strained by nearly seven years at war, the Army can maintain 15 combat brigades in battle for at least a couple of months after July while military commanders assess the situation in Iraq.

"Fifteen deployed brigades, for us, is sustainable for a bit longer, certainly enough to cover what I would think the length of this pause might be," said Casey, the Army's chief of staff.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, have both said they favor a suspension in troop cuts after July to assess security gains before more forces leave the country.

Middleby hiring after buyout

As it turned out, Middleby Corp., which experienced a 12-week worker lockout in July, has done some recent hiring.

The Elgin-based commercial oven maker locked its 135 workers out of its Elgin facility in the summer and only let them return after Teamsters Local 714 voted for a five-year contract that raised employees' health insurance costs and suspended seniority protections.

Such lockouts are rare in Illinois so it garnered attention.

After the lockout, Middleby offered buyouts to workers, and more workers than anticipated accepted. So now Middleby finds itself hiring workers.

"The company says it needs 100 people at the plant and they only have about 85 now," said Gino Rodriguez, a union representative.

Middleby declined to comment on the lockout's aftermath.
