There could be a new addition to the Killeen family soon. At its workshop Tuesday, the Killeen City Council discussed the possibility of adding a new sister city. Members of the Killeen Sister Cities Inc. nonprofit organization asked the city to consider adding San Juan, Puerto Rico, as a sister city. Council members agreed for the city to pursue the possibility of adding San Juan as a sister city and said it would be easiest to keep it under the current Sister City organization. "There's nothing wrong with looking at the opportunities," Councilman Billy Workman said. Currently, the city has one sister city: Osan, South Korea; Central Texas representatives visit Osan annually and representatives from Korea visit Killeen annually.
Update: Library Has 10 Copies of "Water for Elephants"
George Patton's command vehicle in World War II, the entry appeared in last year's parade firing thunderous bursts from the theatrical 50-caliber M-4. The owner, retired Army Reserve Brig. Gen. Bob Brooke, of Hayden, stood stiffly in the Jeep dressed as Old Blood and Guts himself, accompanied by state Sen. Mike Jorgenson, R-Hayden Lake, and two other friends. Ron G. Johnson/Rathdrum: "This is the Fourth of July, and freedom was won with guns that made noise, and I don't see any reason why we can't do that in the parade." DFO: Mayor Sandi Bloem and the chamber made a good call. There's no reason for a parade entry to spoil this celebration b/c a coupla middle-agers want to shoot off their own version of fireworks along the route. Question: Do you support the chamber's decision to allow the Patton command vehicle replica but not the noise from the 50-calibre gun? .
Angelina Heads to Iraq to Talk Humanitarian Aid, Not Babies
For the second time in the past seven months, Angelina Jolie is visiting Iraq to meet with top officials and, apparently, share a little lunch with the troops. She is there on a humanitarian mission to talk about getting aid to the thousands of people displaced by conflict. She sat down with CNN to talk about her reasons for returning to the area, the problems she sees, and what she hopes to accomplish through her work with UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner For Refugees). You can watch her whole interview below, but what got cut off is that the interviewer couldn't help but try to ask about those pregnancy rumors. Whoops. In the full transcript you can see how Angelina responded: Damon: There are reports out of Hollywood that . . .(laughs) Jolie: Oh don't.
Marion-for-Shaq deal close
The Suns are deep into trade talks that would bring Miami center Shaquille O'Neal, "The Big Aristotle," to the Western Conference's first-place team for nine-year Suns star forward Shawn Marion and reserve guard Marcus Banks. Several NBA sources said a deal could be imminent, but everything from the Suns' long-term finances to O'Neal's health have to be weighed before agreeing to the blockbuster move. .
UW lags on donor lungs
Lungs from UW Hospital organ donors were used in transplants just 9 percent of the time in 2006, compared to a national average of 30 percent, according to a public registry of transplant data. - Six of the 17 lungs taken from 117 organ donors that year were discarded, deemed unfit to be transplanted into any of about 70 patients on the hospital 's waiting list or patients at other centers. - The lung transplant rate among patients on UW Hospital 's list was about half the rate expected by the United Network for Organ Sharing, which oversees the country 's transplant system. - Six patients, including four in need of high-risk second lung transplants, went to Loyola University in Chicago for their surgeries after UW Hospital doctors said they would not operate on at least some of them.
Team India in city
Cricket passion today reached a feverish pitch with the arrival of the 14-member Indian team here at Hotel Mountview this evening. The team, however, was in no mood to hang around the hotel where it was greeted by fans amid heavy security. However, Harbhajan, Rahul, Sehwag, RP Singh and Sachin obliged the fans with autographs. Without giving the mediapersons an opportunity to interact, Rahul and his team scurried out of the lobby through a side exit and went to their hotel rooms upstairs. It was a long and disappointing wait for reporters and television crews. However, they appeared somewhat dejected, probably after the three-wicket defeat at the hands of West Indies, who became the second team to qualify for the semifinals. Scheduled to play the knock-out match against Australia at the PCA Stadium on October 29, the team decided against any practice session today.
