| Cameroon: Gov't Accused of Perpetrating Climate Change
A senior official of the World Wide Fund for Nature, WWF, has pinpointed the Cameroon Government as a primary perpetrator in the destruction of natural ecosystems, which has brought about a change in the climate of the country. Dr. Martin Tchamba, Technical Director of WWF in Cameroon, made this statement on the occasion of the World Wetlands Day celebrated in Yaounde, January 4. .
Business column: Reverse mortgage puts cash in owner's hands
A reverse mortgage has the potential to make retirement more pleasant and financially secure than it otherwise might be. An increasing number of seniors find themselves "house rich, cash poor." While seniors have enjoyed rapidly appreciating home values, their incomes may have failed to keep pace with healthcare costs and general living expenses. A reverse mortgage may solve this problem and also provide many other benefits. So, what is a reverse mortgage? A reverse mortgage enables homeowners, age 62 and over, to convert the equity in their homes to cash, without selling the property. The homeowners retain title and all the responsibilities of home ownership, such as taxes, insurance and maintenance. Of course, the homeowners or their heirs do have to repay the loan, plus interest and fees, but that usually doesn't happen until death, sale of the home or if they stop living there permanently (perhaps to live in a nursing home).
More clashes erupt in western Kenya despite deal to end the violence
More clashes erupt in western Kenya despite deal to end the violence Katharine Houreld / Associated Press ELDORET, Kenya -- Young men from rival ethnic groups hunted each other through the streets of a western Kenyan town Saturday, burning houses and blocking roads a day after the country's political foes agreed to try to end weeks of violence. Western Kenya has been at the center of fighting that has engulfed the country since an election that foreign and local observers say was rigged -- and Saturday's clashes underscored how difficult it may be to end the bloodletting, which has left hundreds dead. Both men who signed Friday's deal were still talking tough. President Mwai Kibaki accused his opponents of orchestrating the violence, and Raila Odinga, the opposition leader who says the presidency was stolen from him, said Kibaki's "aggressive statements" were undermining efforts to quell the fighting.

Diane Abbott: Obama can transform the world's image of America
Barak Obama's campaign for the Democratic Party presidential nomination has taken off like a rocket. Some people may be disappointed that he only drew level with Hillary Clinton on "Super Tuesday", but that is an extraordinary achievement when only two weeks ago Clinton had double-digit leads in most of the states concerned. And, like a rocket, his campaign has illuminated many things in a sudden blaze of light. What it has revealed about the attitudes to race of many white British pundits and commentators is not to their credit. Obama had barely won his first caucus when one commentator devoted his column to complaining that it was harder in politics for white women than for black men. As there are 14 white women in the US Senate compared to one black man (Senator Obama) this was a particularly silly claim.
Study: Sugar Substitutes Make You Fatter
It made her reach for fattening foods. "Even candies and stuff like that, so I've tried to get away from it. Being off diet soda, only for a few weeks or a few months now, it's really helped." Congers' story mimics the results of a new Purdue University study. It found rats on a diet containing the artificial sweetener saccharin gained more weight than rats given sugary food. Another recent study found healthy adults who down one diet drink a day could increase their chance for weight gain. Self-professed slender people disagree. "They're totally wrong!" Another said, "So I could be gaining weight right now? I'm ok! Haha." Diet soda drinker Jim Carlisle doesn't buy either study. "If you control what you eat, you can eat candy bars if you want, but you can only eat so much.
