Boomers' guide to financial freedom

Just yesterday your financial life was all about scrambling to make rent, learning what a 401(k) was and lobbying to get out of the cubicle and into an office. Now you're pushing 45 or 50, you've got a mortgage and college tuition bills, and you're the boss of a crop of ambitious 22-year-olds.

Face it, you've reached middle age. Sure, you have a long road ahead - three or four decades or more. But when it comes to your finances, you're not a kid anymore.

"Back in your twenties, you probably thought turning 50 was far in the future," says Mari Adam, a financial adviser in Boca Raton, Fla. "Guess what? Your future is starting now."

Fenwick: Live Blogging of City Commission

Thanks again for reading. I hope this has helped everyone with keeping track of the discussion of city meetings. You know...The Mercury should hire a blogger to blog city meetings to help the public record....might be a good thing to do! Anyways I am off to bed. Good night!

Final Vote 3-2:

Yes: Snead, Phillips, and Hatesohl

No: Strawn and Sherow

Updated 1:55 AM:

Phillips: Had to weigh all the risks to the community when making this decision. Our backs are against the wall we don't have many options. I know I am upsetting a lot of people and I have to live with myself that I know what I am doing now will treat those property owners on the south fairly and eliminates risks.

Sherows vision has a lot of merit, but his judgment is that the community is not willing or ready to do that.

Merger talk lifts shares of Delta

Delta Air Lines Inc. shares soared more than 18 percent Thursday following renewed speculation that the nation's No. 3 carrier may be close to inking a deal to combine with another airline. Delta rose $2.46 to close at $15.98 on the New York Stock Exchange. The surge followed a nearly 15 percent rise in Delta's stock on Wednesday. On Wednesday, the head of the Atlanta-based company's pilots union said in a letter to rank-and-file members that a combination involving Delta may be close. Lee Moak, chairman of the union's executive committee, said in the letter that "consolidation may indeed be at our door."
